Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday that Texas does not need the U.S. military’s help in containing protests over the death of George Floyd, a day after President Donald Trump threatened to dispatch the military to states that cannot quell the unrest. “We will not be asking the United States military to come into the state of Texas because we know that Texans can take care of Texans,” Abbott said during a news conference in Dallas. “We have tremendous police forces in Dallas, in Fort Worth, in the surrounding suburbs, across the entire state. Animal Crossing and friends: Video games are comfort for a pandemic

It’s not easy being a roller coaster mogul, but someone has to do it. At least, that’s what I told myself as I logged into RollerCoaster Tycoon for the third night in a row. It had been 15 years since I played that classic video game, but during the pandemic, it has provided a crucial escape from the small Rhode Island apartment I’m sharing with three other people. Video games tend to have a bad reputation, but they’ve become a source of comfort for many in a time of physical and social restriction. Game sales spiked in March and April, ... Read more

Perils for Pentagon as Trump threatens to militarize response to civil unrest

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – “Battlespace” was the word Defense Secretary Mark Esper used to describe protest sites in the United States. The top U.S. general reinforced that image by appearing in downtown Washington in camouflage during a Monday evening crackdown. Helicopters that could easily be mistaken for active duty U.S. military ones staged show-of-force maneuvers in Washington above people protesting the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis. As President Donald Trump increasingly turns to militaristic rhetoric at a time of national upheaval, the U.S. military appears to be playing ... Read more
