Navy Tells SEAL to Remove Trident from Book About Hero Dog on Bin Laden Raid

This article by James Clarke originally appeared on Task & Purpose, a digital news and culture publication dedicated to military and veterans issues.  Nine years ago Will Chesney got an unexpected call: He was to grab his dog and head to Virginia, immediately. What came next were weeks of exhaustive training as the Navy SEAL and his military working dog, Cairo, prepared for one of the most significant special operations missions in history: Operation Neptune Spear. By May 2, 2011 Cairo and Chesney were on the ground in Abbottabad, Pakistan, taking part in the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden. Nine years ... Read more

Ex-Green Beret Behind Venezuela Raid Suspected of Plagiarism

MIAMI — The former Green Beret behind a failed military incursion in Venezuela can add another infraction to his growing list of potential screw ups — cut and paste plagiarism. The website for Jordan Goudreau’s Silvercorp USA appears to have lifted entire passages from the website of the Department of Homeland Security and as well as one run by a crisis management firm. There are also pages found on the website, without active hyperlinks, with wording nearly identical to online texts from inspirational speaker Tony Robbins, a more-established competitor in the private security industry and the fine print of online ... US ‘had nothing to do’ with ex-Green Beret’s failed raid in Venezuela, says Esper

Defense Secretary Mark Esper was quick to distance his department and the U.S. government at large from a bizarre attempt at overthrowing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro that failed on Monday. The raid resulted in the arrests of two U.S. citizens and roughly a dozen Venezuelans by local authorities. The Americans were later identified as two former Army Green Berets by a third former Green Beret whose company, Silvercorp USA, was purportedly behind the incursion. “The United States government had nothing to do with what’s happened in Venezuela in the last few days,” Esper said during a Pentagon press briefing Tuesday ... Venezuela: 2 US ‘Mercenaries’ Among Those Nabbed After Raid

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said authorities arrested two U.S. citizens among a group of “mercenaries” on Monday, a day after a beach raid purportedly aimed at capturing the socialist leader that authorities say they foiled. Maduro held up a pair of blue U.S. passports, reading off the names and birth dates on them in a nationwide broadcast on state television. He showed images of the fishing boats the alleged attackers rode in on and equipment like walkie-talkies and night-vision glasses collected in what Maduro called an “intense” couple of days. He blamed the attacks on the Trump ... Read more

How US troops survived a little-known al-Qaeda raid in Mali two years ago

U.S. troops were part of a multinational force that repelled a brazen daytime raid by militants inside the United Nations Super Camp near Timbuktu Airport in Mali two years ago, according to award documents obtained by Military Times. Two U.S. soldiers received Purple Heart medals after being injured by a car bomb’s blast wave during the April 14, 2018 attack by local al-Qaeda affiliates, though two others also sustained mild traumatic brain injuries. Several service members said in interviews they believed the politically sensitive nature of African missions, and the fact that some Americans were at risk of capture, may ... Read more
