Sanders drops out: Why he couldn’t replicate Trump’s upset primary victory

For a few brief weeks in February 2020, it looked to many as if Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign would follow the path of Donald Trump’s. Sanders, an outsider candidate disliked by the party establishment, was leading national polls with around 30 percent of his party’s electorate — just like Trump. Sanders performed strongly in the early states, and the rest of the crowded field seemed hopelessly divided. But while Trump parlayed those early victories into an overall triumph in the GOP nomination contest, Sanders did not. Instead, Joe Biden surged, winning South Carolina, most states after that, and a near-insurmountable ... Read more

Bernie Sanders’s legacy is secure, despite dropping out of the Democratic presidential primary

Sen. Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign is over. And unlike his 2016 run, which surely counted as a kind of moral victory, his 2020 loss is a much more crushing and definitive defeat. But what remains true is that Sanders ignited a movement that rapidly pulled the party further left than was imaginable just four years ago. His ideas are the future. That’s Sanders’s victory. Democratic Party primary voters picked a party stalwart in former Vice President Joe Biden over a quasi-outsider promising a revolution. But they did so in part because mainstream figures know how to bend with the wind ... Read more

26 states, territories plan primary elections amid coronavirus crisis

April 8 (UPI) — Nearly half of the United States have yet to vote in their 2020 presidential primary elections as the coronavirus emergency has brought unprecedented disruptions. For weeks, the 2020 U.S. presidential campaign has effectively been pushed to the back burner by the pandemic that has killed more than 70,000 people worldwide. Democratic front-runner Joe Biden seized a commanding delegate lead over rival and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders before the health crisis began to seriously impact the United States. After Wisconsin voted on Tuesday, 22 states still have unfulfilled primaries — Alaska, Wyoming, Ohio, Kansas, Nebraska, Georgia, Oregon, ... Read more

(berniesanders.com via Getty Images) Presidential hopeful and self-proclaimed socialist Bernie Sanders is losing the Democratic vote to former Vice President Joe Biden. Nonetheless, the Vermont senator remains convinced that he has the upper hand “ideologically” among voters. “While our campaign has won the ideological debate, we are losing the debate over electability,” Sanders said last month, following a massive blow to his campaign in recent primaries. ... Wisconsin primary election 2020: News and updates

Despite Wisconsin being under a shelter-in-place order since March 25 due to the coronavirus pandemic, polls still opened in the state’s primary election on Tuesday, April 7. Wisconsin, which has more than 2,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus as of April 5, is the only state out of 11 originally scheduled to hold Democratic presidential primaries in April that has not postponed or substantially changed the way people can vote in this spring’s primaries. Democratic Gov. Tony Evers repeatedly attempted to delay the state’s elections, citing fears that in-person voting could bolster the spread of the coronavirus. But Wisconsin Republicans and ... Wisconsin election results: State Supreme Court and Democratic primary winners

The Wisconsin election is moving forward despite fears about the coronavirus and days of wrangling over whether to postpone voting until the summer, as multiple other states have done. The results won’t come quite so speedily. It’s Joe Biden versus Bernie Sanders on the Democratic presidential primary ballot. Heading into Tuesday’s election, Biden held a firm lead over Sanders, according to FiveThirtyEight’s average of polls, which had the former vice president at 53 percent support and the Vermont senator at 36 percent support. But the more closely watched contest is one that could have a much larger effect on the ... Read more

How Do You Vote in Wisconsin’s Primary Election?

Marc Elias: How to fix our voting rules before November Four western states—Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and the GOP bastion of Utah—already run their elections predominantly by mail, and mail ballots make up a large portion of the vote in California, Montana, and Arizona as well. Hawaii will transition to all-mail voting this year. “It’s not like it’s only been implemented in blue states or blue areas,” said Amber McReynolds, who as the director of elections in Denver helped design Colorado’s mail-balloting system. She now runs Vote at Home, an advocacy group pushing for the adoption of vote by mail across ... Read more

The Coronavirus Killed the Policy Primary

Advocates and activists for the issues Democrats were most concerned about before the virus had been expecting to be out in full force this spring. Instead, they’re sitting at home like everyone else, and they don’t know when their chance will come again, this year or beyond.   “We need to understand that nobody has a crystal ball right now. There are not a lot of people who have a lot of confidence about the way things are going to shape up,” says Peter Ambler, the executive director of Giffords’s gun-safety organization. Squinting for a silver lining in the crisis, he ... Read more

Wisconsin Primary Election Chaos Ensues Amid Closed Polling Locations, Potential Date Shift

On Friday, Milwaukee election officials announced the city would open only five polling locations for the Wisconsin primary on Tuesday, April 7. The city typically has 180 voting cites, but axed other locations due to mass poll worker shortages. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, up to 50,000 Milwaukee voters are expected to show up and vote. This could mean 10,000 voters at each location during a national pandemic where state governments are issuing shelter-in-place orders. These voting conditions make it difficult for voters to adequately practice social distancing measures. Milwaukee election officials just announced the city will have just ... Read more

Judge declines to delay Wisconsin April 7 primary, extends absentee deadline

A federal judge on Thursday declined to delay Wisconsin’s April 7 primary election, saying he doesn’t have the authority to do so. Why it matters: Wisconsin is the only state scheduled to vote next Tuesday that has not yet delayed its primary. Wisconsin’s Democratic Gov. Tony Evers has issued a stay-at-home order to combat the spread of the coronavirus, but his refusal to delay the primary has angered his fellow Democrats and others who believe that he’s putting the public at risk. Details: District Court Judge William Conley denied an emergency request by state Democrats to postpone the election, saying ... Read more
