Pastor Says Church Was Burned Down by People with Ill Intentions

The pastor of First Pentecostal Church of Holly Springs in Mississippi said his church was burned to the ground because his congregants wanted to worship in-person despite the coronavirus restrictions on houses of worship. Jerry Waldrop, who has led his congregation for over 30 years, described the “nightmare” he has experienced during the last several weeks in a USA Today Op-Ed. “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that in America, in our church — the First Pentecostal Church of Holly Springs, Mississippi — I would see armed police standing in our aisles, ordering us to shut down ... ‘Like the Soviet-Styled KGB,’ Armed Police Sent To Shut Down Black Baptist Church, Pastor Says

The amount of obloquy heaped upon religious congregations that insist on exercising their First Amendment right to the free exercise of religion is, quite frankly, one of the most baffling aspects of the coronavirus lockdown to this writer. In New York City, for instance, millennials and other social drinkers are gathering outside bars — many without masks — sipping their “takeaway” drinks and mingling in a way that doesn’t exactly evince social distancing. In response, New York City launched the “Take Out, Don’t Hang Out” campaign, according to Gothamist — a pleasant, hands-off way of dealing with the problem. When ... Read more

Pastor Rips Up Cease-and-Desist Letter During Sermon, Says ‘We’re Gonna Do It God’s Way’

For a Republican governor, Maryland’s Larry Hogan hasn’t exactly been at the tip of the spear when it comes to reopening. This probably shouldn’t have surprised many. Hogan is, to a certain extent, a liberal Republican out of necessity; in a deep-blue state, a Republican politician in a statewide office is a profoundly endangered species, so it’s hardly surprising he’s not exactly Ron DeSantis. One also suspects that’s not the only reason he’s that way, though. Hogan had been mentioned not infrequently as a potential primary challenger to Donald Trump in this year’s election and he’s managed to spar not ... Read more

Pastor Encourages Churches To Open in Defiance of Totalitarian Lockdowns: ‘Stand Up and Roar’

A megachurch pastor is exhorting and organizing his fellow clergymen to defy government shutdown orders and reopen their houses of worship in time for Memorial Day weekend. Brian Gibson, the pastor of HIS Church with congregations in Kentucky and Texas, makes a strong case, based on both the Constitution and common sense. “I believe that Jesus is a lamb, but he’s also a lion,” he said in a video regarding his PeaceablyGather.com movement posted to YouTube on May 8. “You’ve got to decide when to be the lamb and when to be the lion. Wisdom makes that decision. “Right now ... Read more

Illinois Pastor Defies State Order To Close Down Church Services

Standing up for what you believe in can be tough, especially when the state government is bearing down on you. In Lena, Illinois, pastor Stephen Cassell of Beloved Church stood up for what he believes in by reopening his church doors on May 3. Cassell made the decision to reopen despite Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order. The Illinois governor has since come forward and said that churches of more than 50 members may not be allowed to gather for over a year. Cassell explained to The Western Journal that he felt the order was “a massive violation of the First ... Read more

Massachusetts City Crosses the Line, Fines Pastor for Holding Service

It’s good to know that we’re doing what we need to do right now, which is fining pastors for holding church services. The leader of Adams Square Baptist Church in Worcester, Massachusetts, is the latest pastor to face some form of government sanction for deciding he had religious freedom. Kristopher Casey’s congregation sang “God Bless America” following the Sunday service, which probably didn’t help them any. “The Constitution and the Bill of Rights don’t go on vacation when there’s a pandemic. We are protected as a church, and yet the big box retailers are not protected and yet they are ... Read more

DOJ Supports Church Suing Virginia Gov. Northam For Threatening Imprisonment Of Pastor

The Department of Justice announced it will aid a Virginia church suing Gov. Ralph Northam after a pastor was threatened with jail time or a $2,500 fine for hosting a 16-person church service on Palm Sunday. According to Northam’s shelter-in-place restrictions, churches cannot hold services with more than 10 people. The DOJ filed a Statement of Interest in a Virginia federal court citing freedom of religion in support of Lighthouse Fellowship Church, a congregation in Chincoteague Island, Virginia. According to the DOJ’s statement, the congregation serves, among others, recovering drug addicts and former prostitutes. On April 5, Lighthouse Fellowship Church ... Read more

DOJ Sides with Pastor Threatened with Jail, Huge Fine for Holding 16-Person Service

The Department of Justice is supporting a church that is battling the state of Virginia after it claimed the pastor violated the state’s lockdown rules by holding a service on Palm Sunday, saying in a legal filing that “there is no pandemic exception to the Constitution and its Bill of Rights.” Kevin Wilson, the pastor of Lighthouse Fellowship Church on Chincoteague Island, faces jail time or a $2,500 fine, according to Fox News. On April 5, police entered the 293-person capacity church, which held 16 people at the time, and said it was violating an order handed down by Democratic ... Read more

(Rob Carr / Getty Images) A Baltimore pastor is planning to hold his next church gathering despite having been visited by police Sunday after he conducted his weekly service. The Rev. Alvin Gwynn Sr. said that on Sunday, despite having limited his congregation to 10 people, four patrol cars containing “eight or nine officers” showed up, according to The Baltimore Sun. “You should have seen it, man, ... Gov’t Finally Takes Over, Arrests Pastor for Holding Church Service in Violation of COVID Rules

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s never a particularly popular man among the conservative set, but there’s a line between progressivism and Constitution-baiting. De Blasio crossed it and then some, saying that not only would places of worship face fines but could be shuttered for good. At a Friday news conference, de Blasio said that if churches don’t respond to fines, authorities “will take additional action up to the point of fines and potentially closing the building permanently.” “No faith tradition endorses anything that endangers the members of that faith. So, the NYPD, Fire Department, Buildings Department, everyone has ... Read more
