What Will Iran Do As the U.S. Negotiates a Withdrawal from Afghanistan?

Tehran is eager to deepen its influence on Kabul, the Taliban, and other Afghan actors. Iran is watching closely as U.S. and Taliban negotiate an end to America’s operations in Afghanistan. If the expected withdrawal of significant U.S. forces destabilizes Afghanistan, how much influence will Tehran assert its influence over its neighbor to the east? Iran has worked to increase its soft power resonance in Afghanistan, through foreign direct investment and the development of infrastructure linked to communications and transportation. It’s also spent years building ties to key stakeholders in that country, including groups with ethnic, cultural, and religious ties to ... Read more

Iran’s Military Is a Mighty Missile Machine

Missiles are an essential tool of the Iranian regime. They are used for power projection, particularly towards Iran’s neighbors, or for anti-access/area-denial closer to home, in particular over the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. Tehran’s missile collection is among the most diverse in the Middle East because Iran relies on modifications to Soviet/Russian and Chinese designs—although there are some domestic improvements thrown into the mix. Iran has thousands of short and medium-range missiles, and could very likely hit targets as far away as eastern Africa, Eastern and Southern Europe, Russia, India, and western China. Here are some of ... Read more

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted that “unlike the US — which ... Read more

Iran warns US after Patriot deployment to Iraq

Iran warned the US Wednesday that it was leading the Middle East to disaster in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic after it deployed Patriot air defence missiles to Iraq. Iran, which wields huge influence in its western neighbour, said that it had not. The US deployment runs “counter to the official position of the Iraqi government, parliament and people,” a foreign ministry statement said. It called for a halt to “warmongering during ...
