Why Military Use only MIL Grade Connectors? – Swapnil Ramesh Jukunte
The shell type connectors for communication and power supply are common. Most of the companies and Engineers prefer using Industrial grade connectors. But the Industrial grade connectors are not suitable for everyone. For defense and military use, the MIL grade connectors are preferred by the agencies and engineers.
The MIL Grade connectors are used to protect the cable joints from environmental factors. The dust, rust and moisture can cause the short circuit in connections, which is very dangerous. You may lose the connection between the cables due to corrosion or dust. Also, there are chances of fire if the cables are used for the Power Supply and Distribution.
With the MIL-Spec or Military Grade connectors, the naked connections are covered. These are nothing but plastic shells of a different type for different cables. Most of the Military grade connectors are used for the Aerospace and Military applications. These type of connectors do come in MIL-Spec and MIL-STD variants.
All of the MIL Grade connectors come in the pair. One part is called the Male connector or the PIN part and the second part is known as Female connector or the Socket part. These two parts connect together with the cables they are made for an create a solid joint. As they are military-grade, they won’t let any water, dust or contaminant touch the bare joints inside the connector.
All of the engineers know the importance of the Connectors in cabling for Communication, Defence, Aerospace and Power Distribution sectors. That’s why not every product is MIL-SPEC. The Military provides the generic specifications sheet, which is used to manufacture the connectors for specific usage.
The military specifications are provided by different military organizations. Here are a few specifications that are commonly followed while manufacturing the connectors.
● RoHS Compliance — RoHS Stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. The RoHS is the Military specifications passed by the European Union. According to this specification, the product should restrict the leakage of hazardous substances for safety. EU specifications describe Hazardous Substances as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl, and polybrominated diphenyl ether.
● ARINC — The ARINC is the standard used in the Aviation industry to connect the communication and hydraulics cables. It is designed for the Aeroplane connections and is used in almost all of the modern aeroplanes.
Not everyone has expertise in manufacturing the MIL Grade Connectors in India. But hold your beer as Allied Electronics Corporations is a master in manufacturing and supplying the MIL Grade connectors. With the connectors that are robust and compliant with all of the specifications, it is one of the few companies that supply the MIL-Spec Connectors for aviation and defence sector.
Although not everyone can get their hands on the MIL-spec connectors in India, having appropriate permission will help you a lot.
