The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has officially received the first batch of Stryker armoured infantry carrier vehicles from the US Army.

In a ceremony held at the RTA Headquarters in Bangkok, the US Army handed over ten Strykers to Thailand, reported Bangkok Post.

The delivery of the armoured vehicles is part of a previously announced foreign military sales purchase agreement. In July, the sale was approved by the US State Department.

The Thai Army is scheduled to receive 60 US-made Stryker armoured vehicles.

The US Army will also provide RTA with technical assistance to maintain and overhaul the vehicles.

US Army Pacific (USARPAC) commanding general, general Robert Brown said: “Congratulations on modernising the Thai Army and receiving the first Strykers outside the US. We are very excited to continue to work together, and [strengthen our alliance] towards a free and open Indo-Pacific, where all nations can enjoy prosperity and a brighter future.”

Manufactured by the General Dynamics Land Systems, Strykers are eight-wheeled armoured combat vehicles.

The armoured vehicles boost the capabilities of the mechanised units and expedite the process of transporting infantry to critical battlefield positions.

RTA commander-in-chief general Apirat Kongsompong said: “These Strykers will not only enhance the RTA capacity, but will also act as a tangible symbol of friendship, and a witness to the cordial relations between two countries that continue to strengthen alliances and partnerships.

“Today’s handover ceremony is an important step for the RTA modernisation effort, and the development of RTA doctrine.”
