Military calls on Alaska public to comment on new missile defense radar, and how it may impact environment

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) – The public comment period is open for Alaska residents to voice their concerns regarding a new proposed missile defense radar to be constructed in the state.

According to the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), in cooperation with the U.S. Air Force and the FFAA, the military project would be for a Long Range Discrimination Radar. That new radar would be part of the Ballistic Missile Defense System, which the MDA says provides protection of the U.S. from existing missile threats.

Before that can be created, the agencies need to file an Environmental Impact Statement, or EIS, which needs public comments to proceed.

“Your input is important to ensure significant environmental issues, other areas of concern, and alternatives are considered in the EIS process,” the MDA stated.

Those public meetings will be held in Anchorage at the Loussac Library on June 4, in Anderson at the school’s multipurpose room on June 5, and in Fairbanks at the Carlson Center on June 6.

“The public scoping meetings will be conducted in an open house format and will provide attendees with the opportunity to talk with and ask questions of representatives from the MDA and other cooperating agencies,” the release states.
