Helping Veterans Become U.S. Citizens

I first got to know Dr. Nikalesh Reddy, a veteran of the US Army, when he contacted my office in January 2018 to ask for help obtaining clearance with the Army to be an active duty trauma surgeon. Dr. Reddy was an immigrant to the United States and was able to join the Army, which provides for an expedited path to citizenship after service. Dr. Reddy was able to qualify to be a part of this program in part due to his valuable medical skills.

After joining the Army under this program, Dr. Reddy was later appointed to the position of Major by the late Senator John McCain in the 114thcongress. His devotion to our military is not only represented in the high status he has rightly earned, but can also be seen in his desire to help and serve our nation as an active duty trauma surgeon. With the assistance of my office in Glens Falls, Dr. Reddy was able to swiftly legally obtain his clearance in July 2018, just seven months after his initial visit. This highly regarded position will allow Dr. Reddy to use his medical knowledge to help save the lives of American soldiers in battle.

After Dr. Reddy successfully secured this position with the help of our Glens Falls office, he contacted my Plattsburgh district office for assistance in his journey to full U.S. citizenship in December of 2018. With our help, Dr. Reddy completed all the necessary work and officially became a citizen of the United States on May 10th, 2019. I am honored to represent men like Dr. Reddy. He is proof that there is a legal path to immigration in the United States. Dr. Reddy and his family kindly dropped off flowers at my Glens Falls office to thank me and my team for the hard work we have dedicatedly completed to ensure that his legal path to citizenship was smooth. Dr. Reddy’s thoughtful gesture also highlights the hard work my team and I put into our constituent work in the North Country.

“It is a great privilege to be a Major in the US Army and a citizen of this great Nation,” said Dr. Nikalesh Reddy. “I’m so thankful to Congresswoman Stefanik for stepping in and making that a reality for me and my family and I will be forever indebted to her. Constituents in New York’s 21st District should know they are in good hands with her as our representative.”

The assistance my office was able to provide coupled with his military made Dr. Reddy’s path to citizenship fairly straightforward to navigate. However, this process can be very difficult and slow for many immigrants who attempt to legally apply to be citizens of the United States. That is why I am a consistent advocate for commonsense fixes to our immigration system for people who come to our country legally. I commend Dr. Reddy for using my office as a resource in his path to citizenship and am thrilled that today he is a citizen of the freest and most democratic nation on this earth. I am confident that Dr. Reddy will go on to continue to accomplish great things for our country and I look forward to keeping in touch with him and his family.

The assistance I provided to Dr. Reddy reiterated that as a member of Congress, casework is the most important part of my job. In my role as a representative for New York’s 21st district, I am honored to help my constituents with all kinds of issues they are facing and to try and make an impact in their lives. I encourage all of my constituents to contact my offices with their concerns, and I will do everything in my power to assist them.

If you are struggling with an issue that you think my office can help with, do not hesitate to reach out.
