May 15 (UPI) — Prosecutors formally charged two teenagers Wednesday for a shooting at a Colorado high school last week that killed one student.

The accused shooters, Devon Erickson, 18, and Alec McKinney, 16, each face 48 charges for the May 7 shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch. The charges included murder and attempted murder.

Police said the two teens killed 18-year-old Kendrick Castillo and injured eight others at the school about 12 miles south of Denver.

Prosecutor George Brauchler said he planned to charge McKinney as an adult, which his defense attorneys argued against. Douglas County District Court Judge Theresa Slade said she would consider whether to send McKinney back to juvenile court at a future hearing.

The judge denied bond for both suspects.

Court documents identified suspect Alec McKinney as Maya McKinney, but his attorney said he uses male pronouns and the name Alec.

Erickson appeared in court for Wednesday’s hearing, but McKinney did not. Castillo’s parents also were in attendance, dressed up for a celebration of life planned later in the day.
