U.S. Army discloses further details of long-range “Sniper” strike missile – Defence Blog
On April 25, the U.S. Army Contracting Command posted a notice on the U.S. government’s main contracting website, that given further details on the capabilities of its new Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) Extended Range (ER) Modification in support of Precision Fires Rocket & Missile Systems (PFRMS) Project Office (PO).
According to a notice, the GMLRS ER Modification or “Sniper” strike missile effort has been awarded under Undefintized Contract Action (UCA) signed 29 March 2019.
The proposed contract action is a research and development effort for the development and qualification of a hardware design modification to the GMLRS.
This modification extends the range to more than double the range of the existing GMLRS, increases rocket motor diameter, removes forward canards and Control Actuation System, removes the spinning tail section, adds an aft-mounted Control Actuation System with planar/foldable fins, adds a sided mounted proximity sensor, and creates volume in the nose for future technologies.
Test quantities will vary based on best practices and testing needs.
The urgent material release (UMR) option is for GMLRS ER-U (Unitary) and GMLRS ER-AW (Alternative Warhead). The UMR is for the rapid deployment of a critical capability to the warfighter and reduction of the short range engagement burden on an already constrained Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS).
The new GMLRS ER will be a surface-to-surface, all weather, precision-strike guided missile fired from the M270A1 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) and the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).
The GMLRS ER missile will defeat fixed land targets 60-499 kilometers away, and get there faster than current systems.
