The Most Valuable Jewels Sold at Sotheby’s in 2018

The art market in 2018 has faced several ups and downs, while making several new records and also witnessing many failures. The year also proved a success for jewelry sales at Sotheby’s. The year took off on a happy note with the sales of Wallace Chan Gem Set, Jade and Diamond Pendant Earrings at 687,500 HKD. The Sotheby’s catalogue for this masterpiece mentioned, “The five Wallace Chan masterpieces offered for sale in Hong Kong this October demonstrate his supreme mastery, with high drama and emotionally-charged artistry coming together to conjure jewels that are daringly dreamlike, sensual, and sculptural. Chan’s beloved jade is found in one pair of pendant earrings, while in another there is the contrast of texture between a conch pearl and pear-shaped drop: the rolling rhythm of the choker’s diamond-set and agate circles are echoed in meticulously carved discs of rock crystal; and the monumental Tanzanite of the ring, enveloped in its gem-set cocoon, tells of Chan’s audacity of scale.”

In February, an Amethyst, turquoise and diamond necklace from Cartier, circa 1915 was sold at 162,500 CHF. This jewelry piece is “designed as a vase of flowers, set with a pear-shaped amethyst and a cabochon turquoise accented with similarly cut amethyst and circular-cut diamonds, on a cord necklace with onyx and diamond rondelle terminals,” stated Sotheby’s. Next in line is a pair of aquamarine and diamond pendant earrings, ‘Charlize’, Cartier that was sold for 1,562,500 HKD, surpassing the estimated range of 950,000 — 1,400,000 HKD. A rare and important fancy vivid blue diamond and diamond ring was sold in April auction for 108,447,000 HKD.

Another important and one of the most valuable jewelry piece is diamond and emerald order of the saint-esprit, France, circa 1820 that was sold in May for a price of 1,635,000 CHF. An exceptional and highly important natural pearl and diamond pendant from 18th century was sold in the June auction at Sotheby’s Geneva for 36,427,000 CHF. In July, at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, an important and spectacular ruby and diamond ring was presented at the auction and sold for 86,392,500 HKD. Another valuable jewelry item is exceptional sapphire ring from Cartier, which sold for 3,855,000 CHF at Sotheby’s Geneva in September 2018. A pair of opal and diamond earclips by Tiffany & Co. also makes its place among the most valuable jewels of 2018 as it was sold for a whooping price of 75,000 USD, almost five times its estimated value at Sotheby’s New York. And the most recent sales of turquoise and diamond parure by Chaumet, circa 1977, was yet another big affair as it was auctioned for a high price of 225,000 CHF in December.
