The Predator bags $54 million worldwide debut
20th Century Fox‘s The Predator opened in the #1 position at the domestic box office, bagging a trophy to the tune of $24.2 million for the three day weekend. This is on par with 2010’s Predators (the last entry in the series), and just under the original Predator‘s opening weekend when factoring in inflation adjustments (the film opened to $12 million in June of 1987, equal to $26.6 million in 2018). Internationally the film added another $30 million for a global total of $54 million. Directed by Shane Black the film stars Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey, and Yvonne Strahovski.
Warner Bros. Pictures‘ The Nun fell to second place with $18.2 million, falling 66% in its second weekend. The Conjuring spin-off now sits at $85 million domestically. Internationally the film added another $33.1 million in 62 overseas markets for an international total of $143.6 million and a global total of $228.7 million. The film is on par with other entries in the horror franchise and is likely to catch up to its predecessors in the coming weeks. Directed by Corin Hardy, the film stars Demian Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Charlotte Hope, Ingrid Bisu, and Bonnie Aarons, reprising her Conjuring 2 role as the title character.
Lionsgate’s A Simple Favor debuted in third place, bringing in $16 million for its first weekend of release. Considering the film’s reported budget of $20 million, the dark comedy-thriller will likely be a modest hit for the studio. Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively lead the Paul Feig directed movie which also stars Andrew Rannells, Linda Cardellini, Jean Smart, and Rupert Friend.
Sony’s White Boy Rick opened in fourth place with an estimated total of $8.8 million. Richie Merritt stars in the title role of the true story alongside Matthew McConaughey who plays his father in the Yann Demange film. White Boy Rick also features Oscar nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rory Cochrane, Brian Tyree Henry, Bruce Dern, Piper Laurie, Bel Powley, Jonathan Majors, Rapper YG, RJ Cyler, Taylour Paige, and Kyanna Simone Simpson.
Crazy Rich Asians fell from second to fifth place in its fifth weekend of release, adding another $8.7 million to its domestically haul which now sits at $149.4 million. Based on the acclaimed worldwide bestseller by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians features an international cast of stars led by Constance Wu, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, and Awkwafina, with Ken Jeong and Michelle Yeoh. The large starring ensemble also includes Henry Golding, making his feature film debut, Sonoya Mizuno , Chris Pang, Jimmy O. Yang, comedian Ronny Chieng, Remi Hii, and Nico Santos Jon M. Chu directed the contemporary romantic comedy.
The Jennifer Garner lead action-thriller Peppermint fell to sixth place at the domestic box office, bringing in an estimated $6.1 million this weekend. The film now sits at $24.27 million. Directed by Pierre Morel (Taken) and written by Chad St. John, the film also stars John Ortiz, John Gallagher, Jr., Juan Pablo Raba, Annie Ilonzeh, Jeff Hephner, Pell James, and Cliff ‘Method Man’ Smith.
