In this highlight we turn our attention to Chris Jarell, a skillful Actor/Comedian/Director. I asked Chris a series of questions, here is what we discussed;
Tell us a little about yourself, where your from, grew up, what H.S./College you attended etc.
Was born in Chester Pa
Grew up in philly and Delaware county area and then moved to Steelton to live with my grandmother once me and my mom lost our house. We always moved a lot.
But I think that’s what makes me who I am because I’m extremely well rounded. You can take me anywhere and I fit in.
What inspired you to be an artist/comic/entertainer? Early experiences worth sharing?
Well I was always funny even as a child my parents tell me. My dad tells this story of where he taught me this song early in the morning called “nick nack patty wack”
And by the evening he had stop to get some gas and while he was pumping the gas I locked him outside of the car by locking all the doors. He yelled at me to open the door to which I laughed and eventually did.
And as he was driving with me in the back he was steaming mad. And I broke up the silence with by saying in my 3 year old accent “patty wack….give a dog bone!”
He had to pull over because he was laughing so hard.
So I was basically doing call back jokes since I was 3 years old
Fast Forward 15 years the real seed was planted by a co worker who said I should Try open mic when I was 18. I thought about it and played with the idea. And then one day on the job wads sykes walked in and I was starstruck a little bit. I found a way to make convo while bagging her groceries and tried to make her laugh and she said I was funny and I ask her if I should try it.
She told me how she use to sneak Dave Chappelle into comedy clubs when he was like in his teens and from that moment I said I would do it. Been on the journey ever since.
Talk about a time where you have faced adversity/conflict and have triumphed.
I ended being homeless when I moved back to philly (around the same time I started comedy)
So I ended up finding this college for vocational training that allowed me to go for free. So it wasn’t a hard decision even though it side tracked me from comedy for a while. I did what I had to do until I could do what I wanted to do.
What do you believe sets you apart from other entertainers?
I think what sets me apart is that realize we are all more similar to each other than we think. Which I feels gives me a different level of understanding of the “misunderstood” and empathy for other entertainers.
Do you have other interests or hobbies?
I’m a huge football fan and use to play in high school. I’m a pretty athletic guy. I Ben coach youth football in my spare time when I can.
Any projects you have out or currently working on?
I played Benny Hope on the Teddy Perkins episode on ‘Atlanta’ one of my favorite shows.
That was a huge moment for me. It was my smallest speaking role but it had a huge impact on me and my career to be honest. Donald Glover is one of the People I look up to in entertainment.
I also just finished filming a movie over the summer with Thomas Jane called ‘Crown Vic’
It won’t be out until maybe next year or so.
And I’m currently shadow directing the ABC showcase which I was apart of in 2016.
Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?
I would like to see my self on a world tour in Comedy and always on a film or TV set. I like to just dreams big and hustle day to day until it’s done.
What advice can you give to aspiring entertainers?
Its ok to make mistakes but you can’t make excuses.
