Glyndebourne has appointed Stephen Langridge as its new artistic director.

He replaces Sebastian F Schwarz as the opera company’s artistic leader.

Schwarz resigned last December after just two years as general director, citing the pressures between the artistic and business elements of the company as being behind the decision.

The role of general director has subsequently been split into two, with Langridge taking responsibility for the company’s artistic vision and creative output.

Langridge, currently director for opera and drama at Gothenburg Opera in Sweden, will join Glyndebourne as artistic director early next year.

He will co-lead the company with managing director Sarah Hopwood, who was promoted in March from her role as director of finance and resources and is now in charge of business and financial operations.

Langridge said of his appointment: “Underlying all my work is the belief that opera is a natural and dynamic form of human expression, to which everybody should have access, both as a participant and audience. I am thrilled to take up this appointment as artistic director of Glyndebourne, and join the superb team of talented and ambitious people making extraordinary and transformational opera experiences.”

Langridge’s work has included directing productions for the Royal Opera House, Aldeburgh Festival and the Dutch National Touring Opera, as well as for Glyndebourne.

Executive chairman Gus Christie said: “I am delighted Stephen will be joining Glyndebourne as our new artistic director. Having worked here as a director in the 1990s, he has a strong understanding of the company.

“From both his work as a stage director all around the world and his experience running the Gothenburg Opera House, I am confident he will be a great fit for the company and I am very much looking forward to having him co-leading Glyndebourne in the coming years.”
