A man accused of masturbating while staring at subway riders on the A and R lines has been arrested. And the police credit “many” Crime Stoppers tips leading them to the suspect.
Investigators believe that Roberto Remedios, 62, is responsible for at least three public lewdness incidents in the past few months. The first was on April 26th: According to the NYPD, at 10 p.m. on a northbound R train near 53rd Street in Sunset Park, a man “sat across from a 24-year-old victim and proceeded to masturbate as he starred at her.” He then fled.
Then, on May 17th, around 2 p.m. on an R train at Canal Street station, police say the suspect “masturbated his penis over his pants in front of the victim, a 26-year-old female,” before the victim left the train at Prince Street.
Less than two weeks after the second incident, on May 26th, on a northbound A train heading into Manhattan from Liberty Avenue and 104 Street Station in Queens, “an unidentified male masturbated his penis over his pants in front of the victim, a 19-year-old female,” police say. The victim left the train while the suspect stayed on the train.
Victims from the first and second incidents shared photographs of the suspect (including one where he’s holding a Spider-Man backpack), which likely spurred tipsters to contact Crime Stoppers (1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
Remedios was reportedly arrested outside his Bronx home and is expected in Manhattan Criminal Court today. Remember: If you see or experience sexual misconduct in the subway (this includes seeing a masturbator, being groped, being grinded on, etc.), you can report it to the MTA and police on this website. There’s also a place for you to upload photos and/or video. Don’t let the perverts win.
