Steve Wynn Faces Dozens Of Allegations Days Short Of One Year Anniversary As RNC Finance Chair
When Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel introduced billionaire Steve Wynn as the group’s finance chairman last January, she highlighted his “meaningful relationships with his employees, guests, and Americans of all backgrounds”. As it turns out, some of the hotelier’s relationships with people were not as rosy as was claimed.
An explosive report by the Wall Street Journal claims dozens of people have accused Wynn of sexual misconduct during his rise to power. The accusations include a settlement worth millions of dollars and reports of employees hiding in backrooms just to avoid him when he was coming around.
The WSJ reported many of the accusations stem from an on-site salon at one of Wynn’s hotels that opened in 2005. However, they discovered more accusations dating back into the 1990s.
The outlet spoke to more than 150 people for the extensive report. One manicurist accused Steve Wynn of raping her in his office suit after giving him a manicure. The case eventually settled for $7.5 million.
His reputation was so well-known among the employees that the female workers would reportedly hide when they heard he was making an appearance.
Former employees said they sometimes entered fake appointments in the books to help other female workers get around a request for services in Mr. Wynn’s office or arranged for others to pose as assistants so they wouldn’t be alone with him. They told of female employees hiding in the bathroom or back rooms when they learned he was on the way to the salon.
“Everybody was petrified,” said Jorgen Nielsen, a former artistic director at the salon. Mr. Nielsen said he and others repeatedly told high-level company executives Mr. Wynn’s sexual advances were causing a problem, but “nobody was there to help us.”
Steve Wynn was announced as finance chairman of the RNC after serving on the inauguration committee for Republican Donald Trump. While Wynn once donated to Democrats and claimed to have voted for Barack Obama in 2008, he would soon reportedly dump millions into Karl Rove’s group, Crossroads GPS.
Wynn also explored a business deal with Kushner Companies in recent months, the company formerly headed by Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. CNN noted the deal was “unusual for Wynn because his company has never developed or branded a project without a casino attached to it.”
Steve Wynn denied the allegations to the Wall Street Journal, which included regularly exposing himself to female employees of the salon in a variety of ways. A former casino executive who worked with Wynn stated he engaged in “chronic sexual harassment of female employees” in a deposition from a lawsuit in the early-1990s.
This certainly appears to be yet another instance of a powerful man criminally taking advantage of the people he hoarded power over in one way or another. Assuming this leads to the ouster of Wynn from his position of power, we are still left with the question: when will this reach the highest office in the land?
