The Kunstmuseum Basel will be hosting an exhibition of works by artist Georg Baselitz titled “Georg Baselitz. Works on Paper.” The show runs through April 2018.
The exhibition marks the eightieth birthday of Georg Baselitz (b. Jan 23, 1938). He is considered to be one of the distinguished figures in German postwar art. The show runs concurrently with a retrospective of his oeuvre at the Fondation Beyeler. The exhibit showcases a representative survey of his drawings and colored graphic art from the museum’s Kupferstichkabinett (Department of Prints and Drawings). On display are a selection of ca. 88 works from the museum’s holdings as well as 15 more recent pieces on loan from the artist.
The long-standing relationship between the artist and the Kunstmuseum Basel goes back to 1970. Then director of the Kupferstichkabinett, Dieter Koepplin, gave a boost to the 32-year-old artist’s career by organizing the first exhibition of his drawings. 25 sheets from the show entered the museum’s holdings. The collection was enlarged in the 1980s with the addition of works from the show “Georg Baselitz. Drawings 1958–1983.” The artist then complemented these works by donating several works, helping the museum build a well-rounded collection of his art. The Kupferstichkabinett now has a sizable collection of 152 of Baselitz’s drawings and watercolors.
“Georg Baselitz. Works on Paper” runs from January 21, through April 29, 2018, at the Kunstmuseum Basel | Neubau, St. Alban-Graben 16, 4051 Basel, Switzerland.
