In any analysis of politics at any level, a characteristic of politicians that I feel is too often overlooked is recklessness. A focus is (occasionally) justifiably put on to a politician’s intelligence, work-ethic, policy positions, and record of past political work. There seems to be a lack of analyzing what I believe to be one of the most worrying parts of human psychology, recklessness.
Obviously, there are a number of traits that a politician (along with all other humans) can have, some of which I listed earlier. There is also the obvious point that personality and psychological traits almost always somewhat overlap.
Another introductory point that is extremely important is to not equate reckless behavior with being decisive or bold.
Recklessness is defined as “utterly unconcerned about the consequences of some action; without caution; careless”
A person can be decisive, bold, confident or all of the above while still taking consequences into consideration.
Recklessness in the arena of politics can be extremely problematic. Politics and the choices that are made in politics can often have a direct impact on people’s lives. Recklessness in politics is potentially disastrous because a lack of attention to potential consequences could cause real issues for a lot of people. One of the most extreme examples is war. Recklessly running into a country to start a war can have horrible effects on not only members of the military, but also people who live in the invaded country.
More attention needs to be brought to the issue of controlling reckless behavior in the decision making that happens in politics which can often affect all of our lives. recklessness. Dictionary.com. Dictionary.com Unabridged. Random House, Inc. http://www.dictionary.com/browse/recklessness
