Is Facebook Broken?

Facebook needs to be fixed, says Facebook creator, founder, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In a long Facebook post, Mr. Zuckerberg stated many things about what Facebook did right and did wrong in 2017. Most importantly, he stated the social network has made “too many errors enforcing our policies and preventing misuse of our tools.” I believe Zuckerberg is referring to the constant need of apologies throughout 2017. From the allowing of letting Russians buy election ads on Facebook, thus tampering with the 2017 U.S. election, to inflating user engagement numbers on Facebook page videos and posts, and also censoring a black activist for calling out racism. That’s only to name a few.

Continuing in his open post, he says the following: “The world feels anxious and divided, and Facebook has a lot of work to do — whether it’s protecting our community from abuse and hate, defending against interference by nation states, or making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent.” All of this is only on the political front.

In my experience using Facebook, I have noticed a slew of unnecessary features get added to the platform just for the sake of adding them. I’m not the only one that feels this way about Facebook and I don’t know why we as users continue to take this sort of negative experience. Technology news and media network, The Verge, gave the tech giant an annual report card grade of a C. Pretty generous for what I think they deserve. Question of the Day

“Do you think Facebook could redeem itself? Did everything that happened on Facebook in 2017 change your views about the platform?”

“Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.”

– Albert Einstein
