The Supreme Court is in a huge crisis under the Trump Administration
One of the biggest crimes to occur in recent US political history was the replacing of Justice Antonin Scalia. Scalia had died in February 2016 under the Obama Administration, yet, due to the illegal actions of Mitch McConnell and other Republicans in office, Obama’s pick of Merrick Garland was not met by the Senate, and therefore not given a chance to be approved/disapproved. It was, without a doubt, one of the most disgusting actions to be committed by a major political party in this country.
The delay resulted in Trump winning the presidency and gaining control over the new Supreme Court pick. Trump appointed Neil Gorsuch, who was, for all intents and purposes, a constitutionalist with very conservative views. Despite fierce resistance from the Democratic Party, with the exception of traitors Joe Manchin, Heidi Heitkamp, and Joe Donnelly, Gorsuch was ultimately successfully approved.
While that was bad, the silver lining was that it essentially meant the Supreme Court would remain as it originally was: a moderate judicial arm that would vote either left or right on issues depending on the swing vote of the centrist (i.e. Anthony Kennedy).
But the question then becomes what if Trump were to gain the ability to nominate even more justices to the highest court in the land? As many of our readers are aware, most of the Justices are above the age of 60, with two of the more liberal ones (Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer) over 75. Not that we wish any ill upon them, but it is very possible that their health could fail and Trump and the Republicans gain even more control over a branch of government that has lifetime appointments.
Trump evidently thinks about this too. In yet another report from Axios substantiated by secret sources within the White House, the President is very hopeful that he will have a chance to select three more nominees to the Supreme Court. They will be replacing Kennedy (who may retire), Ginsburg, and Sotomayor. The conversation supposedly went as follows:
“Ginsburg,” Trump replied. “What does she weigh? 60 pounds?”
“Who’s the fourth?” the source asked.
“Sotomayor,” Trump said, referring to the relatively recently-appointed Obama justice, whose name is rarely, if ever, mentioned in speculation about the next justice to be replaced. “Her health,” Trump explained. “No good. Diabetes.”
That he has these in-depth thoughts is absolutely disgusting, and shows just how much disrespect he has for some of the longest serving public servants in our nation’s history. But this does bring up an imperative point: the Democrats must win the majority of seats at least the Senate in 2018. Otherwise, Trump will be able to fill the courts and make them conservative for the next couple decades. And we have already seen the problems with the current moderate Johns Court.
