Survey: 16 Historical Projects at Art Basel in Miami Beach

The Survey sector will make a return this year to Art Basel in Miami Beach for its fourth consecutive year.

The sector highlights artworks created prior to the year 2000. Survey will feature 10 new exhibitors to the sector this year and 7 of them are new to Art Basel such as Ricardo Camargo Galeria, Ceysson & Bénétière, Hales Gallery, A arte Invernizzi, Galeria Jaqueline Martins, Richard Saltoun Gallery and Offer Waterman. A arte Invernizzi will mount a specially curated project dedicated to alternative and innovative forms of painting that emerged in Milan during the 1950s and 1960s including works by Rodolfo Aricò (b. 1930, d. 2002), Dadamaino (b.1930, d. 2004) and Mario Nigro (b. 1917, d. 1992). Hales Gallery will explore painter Frank Bowling’s (b. 1936) formative years from 1968 to 1973. Making its debut at Art Basel, Offer Waterman will feature key works by British modernist William Turnbull (b. 1922, d. 2012), including 9 color field paintings and 4 related sculptures from Turnbull’s mid-career period (1959–1972). Ceysson & Bénétière will feature artworks by Claude Viallat (b. 1936) and Noël Dolla (b. 1945).These artists challenged cultural production from the perspective of political and social unrest late 1960s France. The 7 galleries featured in Survey will showcase strong political presentations, including The Box presenting early drawings and paintings by Judith Bernstein (b. 1942). The artist explores political landscapes, power, and aggression in society.

Art Basel was founded in 1970 by gallerists from Basel. Today it holds the world’s premier art shows for Modern and contemporary art, in Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong. Each show is unique and is defined by its host city and region and reflected through its participating galleries, artworks presented, and the content of parallel programming in collaboration with local institutions for each edition.

The 16th edition of Art Basel will be held in Miami Beach, whose Lead Partner is UBS, will take place from December 7 to December 10, 2017, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Dr, Miami Beach, FL 33139, USA.
