In partnership with Bookeeen, the French retailer Carrefour has launched a new ereader under its Nolim brand.

Launched in 2013, Nolim is the name of Carrefour ebook platform, including its ebookstore and previous ereader models.

The new Nolim ereader features a Carta E-ink screen and a specially designed case. It is available today in Carrefour stores at a retail price of  €129 ($144 USD).

Specs

  • Screen: 6’’ Carta E-ink w frontlight & touchscreen
  • Screen resolution: 1024 x 758
  • Storage: 8GB
  •  Battery life: 3 weeks
  • Built-in WiFi
  • Smartcover
  • Accelerometer
  • 4 buttons: Next page, Last page, Menu, and FrontLight

All in all that is not much of an ereader, not when you can buy the Kindle Paperwhite for the same price and get a 300 ppi screen (and the option of adding TTS and accessibility via an extra USB accessory).

Carrefour is pitching its ereader on the basis of its case:

The Nolim e-reader is not a piece of technology; it’s a new kind of book. The designers behind the Nolim wanted to assert this vision of the e-reader by incorporating the cover into a single item that is both elegant and practical. Just as when you settle down to read you first open the book, the Nolim is turned on and off by opening its cover.

A key aspect of its design is its silicone casing. Selected to ensure that the Nolim really was a robust and easily transportable object that could withstand everyday use, the casing provides the same soft sensation as paper.

I think that is a load of marketing nonsense, but to be fair what else could they do to set their device apart?

And sometimes the case does make a difference; for example, I prefer the first Kobo Aura H2O rather than its replacement because one has a rubber shell and the other has a textured plastic shell. The rubber is simply a better tactile experience.

If you are near a Carrefour store, we would love to read a first-hand report of the new ereader.
