UC Davis wins in tournament debut, faces Kansas next





Chima Moneke had 18 points and 12 rebounds as UC Davis won in its first NCAA Tournament appearance, beating North Carolina Central, 67-63, in a First Four game Wednesday night at Dayton, Ohio.

The 16th-seeded Aggies rallied in the second half and held off North Carolina Central down the stretch to earn a trip to Tulsa to play No. 1 seed Kansas on Friday.

Brynton Lemar scored 15 points and Lawrence White added 14 for UC Davis, which had earned a trip to the tournament by winning the Big West Conference Tournament.

The Aggies (23-12) won despite 18 turnovers that led to 20 points for streaky North Carolina Central (25-9). But the Eagles couldn’t overcome poor shooting that deteriorated even more in the second half.

Kamau Stokes scored 19 of his 22 points in the second half of a wide-open game and Kansas State pulled away to a 95-88 victory over Wake Forest.

Eleventh-seeded K-State (21-13) got its first NCAA Tournament win in five years and a trip to play No. 6 Cincinnati on Friday in Sacramento as part of the South Regional. The Bearcats are known for their tight defense.

Wake Forest finished 19-14.
