Online reaction is mixed after Maddow reveals some Trump tax details





Online reaction was mixed but largely unenthusiastic after Rachel Maddow revealed a modest list of details from President Trump’s 2005 tax returns on her MSNBC show Tuesday night.

Trump made more than $150 million, paid $38 million in federal income taxes, and took a $103 millon write-down on business losses, Maddow said.

The president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., responded with sarcastic thanks to Maddow for making his father look good, in his estimation:

Another Democrat, former US secretary of labor Tom Perez, suggested that taxes — despite the many months Trump has spent refusing to divulge them — may not be the topic he would least like to discuss:

The Democratic National Committee released a statement questioning Trump’s past claims that he cannot release his tax returns because he is under audit by the Internal Revenue Service:

Laurence Tribe, a professor of constitutional law at Harvard Law School, suggested that more important than the taxes themselves was the White House’s claim that it is illegal to publish the return:
