Donald Trump Just Told Another Lie About The Election On Live Television (VIDEO) ⋆ Epeak . Independent news and blogs
It Was The Biggest Win ‘Since Reagan’…If You Don’t Count Most Of The Other Elections
President Donald Trump can’t seem to stop obsessing over November’s election results. As if his unfounded claims of voter fraud costing him the popular vote weren’t enough, he now appears to have difficulty grasping the reality of the electoral vote that he actually did win. Trump used the opening remarks of Thursday’s press conference to once again bring the election into the conversation. And once again, he blatantly misrepresented the truth. In what may be the easiest claim to fact check in history, the President said:
“I put it out before the American people. I got 306 electoral college votes. I wasn’t supposed to get 222. They said there was no way to get two hundred twenty-two, two hundred thirty is impossible. Two hundred seventy, which you need, that was laughable. We got three hundred six. Because people came out and voted like they’ve never seen before. So that’s the way it goes. I guess it was the biggest electoral college win since Ronald Reagan.”
Except that it wasn’t. And anybody with the most basic curiosity and an internet connection could readily see that. Assuming they don’t personally remember.
There have been eight elections since Ronald Reagan’s blowout of Walter Mondale in 1984, where “The Gipper” claimed 525 electoral votes:
- 1988: George HW Bush defeated Michael Dukakis, winning 426 electoral votes.
- 1992: Bill Clinton defeated HW Bush, 370 electoral votes.
- 1996: Clinton defeated Bob Dole, 329 electoral votes.
- 2000: George W Bush defeated Al Gore, 271 electoral votes.
- 2004: W Bush defeated John Kerry, 286 electoral votes.
- 2008: Barack Obama defeated John McCain, 365 electoral votes.
- 2012: Obama defeated Mitt Romney, 332 electoral votes.
Where Does Trump Rank In Electoral Votes ‘Since Reagan’?
The President defeated Hillary Clinton in November of 2016 and as he mentioned, picked up 306 electoral votes. That places him ahead of only George W Bush’s two narrow, one-state margin victories in 2000 and 2004. He’s not even the “second biggest” win since Reagan. Or the third. And so on. Furthermore, every Presidential election since 1964 has drawn from a pool of 538 electoral votes, so his percentage also places him 6th out of 8.
If he can’t tell the truth about his upset victory, can we honestly expect the truth about Russia and China?
