Who are the semifinalists for the 2017 James Beard awards?

The semifinalists for the 2017 James Beard awards have been announced. There are several area contenders for national nominations.

Garrett Harker is a contender for restaurateur of the year.

Mentioned for best new restaurant are SRV in the South End and Drifters Wife in Portland. Alison Pray of Portland’s Standard Baking Co. is up for outstanding baker. The Baldwin Bar in Woburn and the Portland Hunt + Alpine Club in Portland are both in consideration for outstanding bar program. Ana Sortun of Oleana in Cambridge is up for outstanding chef, and Oleana’s Maura Kilpatrick for outstanding pastry chef. In the latter category, we’ve also got Ilma Lopez of Piccolo in Portland. For outstanding restaurant, there are several Maine contenders: Chase’s Daily in Belfast and Fore Street in Portland. Garrett Harker (Eastern Standard, Island Creek Oyster Bar, Row 34, and others) and Ken Oringer (Uni, Toro, Coppa, and others) are both in contention for outstanding restaurateur; Harker’s Eastern Standard is also a semifinalist for outstanding service. Boston’s O Ya is mentioned for outstanding wine program, and for outstanding wine, beer, or spirits professional we’ve got Rob Tod of Allagash Brewing Company in Portland and Chris Weld of Berkshire Mountain Distillers in Sheffield. Semifinalists for rising star chef of the year include Irene Li of Mei Mei and Juan Pedrosa of Yvonne’s, both in Boston, and Cara Stadler of Tao Yuan in Brunswick, Maine.
