OWCAs a professional technology writer, I use a lot of different products.
Whether I'm testing something for a review, or just because I think it's cool I end up trying a lot out.
Some of those gadgets I end up using every day, and of those the one I couldn't live without is OWC's Thunderbolt 2 Dock.
I've written about this dock before, but it's on sale for under $200 for the first time in months. The price on this product is steady, so any discount is worth talking about.
What makes this dock so useful is that for the "price" of one Thunderbolt port, you get access to so many others. This dock has 5 standard USB 3 ports, an HDMI port, Ethernet port, FireWire 800 port, a Thunderbolt port, a headphone jack and a microphone port.
As a power user I'm currently using almost all of them. I use Ethernet because a wired connection, while less convenient than Wi-Fi is faster and more consistent. The thunderbolt port is hooked up to an OWC 2-drive RAID to keep all my media backed up.
I also keep a 256gb flash drive, 480gb OWC SSD-based flash drive, and my old 500gb MacBook Pro SSD in an enclosure hooked up via USB for various files. The remaining USB port is taken up by my webcam, which I use when recording podcasts or video chatting with family or friends.
In my experiences all of these devices have functioned flawlessly, despite all being hooked up at once. My internet is speedy, the read and write speeds to any of the drives is similarly quick. Drives have never randomly ejected, regardless of whether or not the computer was waking from sleep or being freshly booted.
If you're a power user and don't have a dock like this, you're missing out. Not having to worry about which peripheral to plug in, and having the ability to have all this extra storage available at all times is incredibly useful. Given how I use my computer these days I couldn't imagine getting my work done without it.
